Not sure which Malifaux Fourth Edition Faction Book to pick up first? Our guide compares the Guild, Ten Thunders, and Explorer's Society to help you choose based on playstyle and lore interest.
Quick answer
Start with the Guild Faction Book if you want a balanced entry into Malifaux’s lore and playstyle. Choose Ten Thunders for stealth and intrigue, or Explorer’s Society if discovery and forbidden knowledge appeal to you.
Each book covers a complete faction
The Malifaux Fourth Edition Faction Books are standalone references that include full stat and Upgrade card presentations for every model in that faction, plus updated biographies. They don't overlap, so you only need the one that matches your chosen faction.
Tone and playstyle differences
The Guild is about order, control, and ruthless ambition—think marshals, Witch Hunters, and hidden corruption. Ten Thunders favors patience, precision, and power, operating through criminal enterprise and political maneuvering. Explorer’s Society leans into sacrifice and forbidden knowledge, with scholars and treasure hunters pushing into danger.
How to choose your first faction book
- Start with the Guild if you want a balanced entry: The Guild offers a classic authority-vs-corruption theme with broad model support. It’s the most straightforward faction to learn and play.
- Pick Ten Thunders for stealth and political intrigue: If you prefer hit-and-run tactics, subterfuge, and a faction that operates from the shadows, Ten Thunders delivers that playstyle and narrative.
- Choose Explorer’s Society for lore depth and risk-taking: This faction rewards players who enjoy high-risk, high-reward strategies and uncovering Malifaux’s secrets. Expect a steeper learning curve but rich storytelling. All three books are priced similarly, so your decision should be driven by faction theme and playstyle rather than cost.
